Last Edit/Update: 01 July, 1999 Video Review of "Human"

It's no secret to those of you who have heard Glass Eden's self titled debut release, that angst, pain, self-torture and inner-conflict abound with his lyrics and sound. The video of "Human" is no different. Scenes range from blurred face shots of Peter Blackwell singing in an evil schroud of dark greenish-blue flitered light to a torture chamber where inner nightmarish conflict and physical pain adjust to the screen and the imagination.

This video isn't for the terror squeemish. It's not the type of video you would see on VH-1 either. It reminds me a bit of the NIN movie "Broken", but not quite as intense or severe in terms of the torture, length (of course), and clear shots. The production is very good, and no wonder, Peter Blackwell himself a film, music and television personality living in Los Angeles, and would probably have some pretty good connections for film and studio work. All that aside, what is really nice about this video is that it brings the lyrics and music to life visually.

I think the best part of Peter Blackwell's work for me is his honesty in terms of his expression of pain. I don't necessarily mean physical pain, but inner pain -- pain that most if not all of us have felt in our lives at one time or another yet to different extremes. Pain that cuts so deep, you might want to inflict more upon yourself (or someone else) out of guilt because you feel so damn low and of little value to the world around you, or you were programmed you were a worthless piece of shit from the beginning. It's not a pretty picture, and neither is this video, which pretty much cuts to the bone with these issues surrounding pain and being "Human".

If you have a chance in the LA area to see Glass Eden play live I wouldn't miss them. Likewise the next best thing is to pick up the debut release. Thanks for sending me this video, it was a real organic experience ;) .-Kim Alexander/Last Sigh Magazine

Much like fellow industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, Glass Eden is actually a pseudonym for the work of one disturbed individual. In this clip for "Give Up," Peter Blackwell stalks around the desert like a cowboy, as cavemen-like people are lured to promote causes they can't possibly understand. A perfect add for any heavy show looking to promote a well-executed independent release.

Glass Eden, Glass Eden/Human (Reality) CD/Video

On the "Human" video, what begins looking like an bondage/fetish dominatrix fantasy quickly turns into a cyber makeover of the weak and worthless human by said dominatrix as the band do the victim's sense of self-worth no good at all by hurling various abuse at him all to a pumping electro industrial soundtrack. Pretty good and bodes well for the album which promises more of the same.-Jimmy Possession/R & EB-Cambridge, England
